The Volvo 60 'V1' was designed and built for the Volvo Round the World Ocean Race. This epic competition sees these high-tech vessels race around the globe in gruelling conditions, often at speeds in excess of 30 knots.

The Volvo 60 can cater for groups of up to 18 guests sailing or 25 on the light show wine cruise.

V1 (nee EF Language, Illbrook, DHL) won the Round the World race under legendary Skipper Paul Cayard in 1998. She held the trans Atlantic & 24-hr speed record and has twice won her division in the Sydney-Hobart Yacht Race.

Volvo boats are the benchmark class for long distance offshore sailing and have a global following as the “Formula 1” of yachting. The design is one of the most recognised off shore yachting classes in the world. See information on the around the world race at www.volvooceanrace.org

This fantastic yacht is now available for charter on Hong Kong Harbour for individuals and groups of up to 25 guests. We can tailor make a package that suits you.

HISTORY

The first Round the World race was run in 1973. It started as an amazing adventure racing through waters unknown to most yachtsmen. By 1998 the event had become an arms race with ever larger maxi yachts and hugely expensive campaigns to win the event. Volvo took over sponsorship of the race and a ‘Class” yacht was designed so that teams could be more evenly matched. In 1998 six purpose built Volvo 60 yachts competed in the race. A Swedish company EF Education put two boats into the race V1 and V2. V1 sailed by legendary Skipper Paul Cayard (see www.cayardsailing.com) won the race convincingly and almost all of the Volvo boats beat the maxi yachts. This established these boats as the fastest offshore yachts in the world at the time. Interest in the race blossomed and in 2005 the Current Volvo 70’s replaced the Volvo 60s. The Volvo Race is now the premier yachting event in the world even eclipsing the Americas Cup. The cost of putting a Volvo Round the World campaign together is approximately US$30m.

V1 went on to be the trial boat for the German Team Illbrook who in 2002 won the Volvo race again. In 2004 she was shipped to Sydney by Iain Murray and has been campaigned as V1 DHL.

We purchased V1 in 2009 in Sydney and sailed her to Hong Kong to start Hong Kong Yachting. To our knowledge, there is no other yacht in Hong Kong with the heritage and performance of this yacht. As a result of her racing pedigree, she is simply a beautiful yacht to sail – something we are used to in Australia but quite a new experience for the locals in Hong Kong.

The Volvo 70s have a canting keel and like a Formula 1 race car are very impractical and far too hi tech for normal sailing. A canting keel yacht would never pass survey for sailing with passengers. The Volvo 60s are therefore the last high performance racing boats robust enough to put into survey.
